ANNOUNCEMENT OF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Instructor, Chemistry

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Instruct courses in the chemistry curriculum and their associated laboratories. Curriculum responsibilities may include any course taught at the community college level.
  2. Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  3. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district wide activities and committees as assigned.
  4. Assignment will frequently include evening classes and may include weekend classes.

Minimum Qualifications:

Faculty/Educational Administrators complete the Equivalency Application only if you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the position you are applying to, and you wish to be considered.
  1. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (d):
    1. Possess the California Community College Teaching Credential for this subject area.
    2. Possess a Master's degree from an accredited institution in chemistry.
    3. Possess a Bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry AND a Master's degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry from an accredited institution.
    4. Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.
  2. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desired Qualifications
1. Possession of a Master's or Doctorate degree in Chemistry.

Conditions of Employment
Contract (tenure-track) full time, two-semester per year position. Start date to be arranged with the Dean for Fall of 2009.

1. Please describe your knowledge of and experience in the safe usage of hazardous materials that may be used in chemistry lectures or laboratories.

2. Please describe your recent experience and demonstrated abilities in teaching lectures and associated laboratories in college-level chemistry, preferably in several areas including general education chemistry, allied health chemistry, preparatory chemistry, and chemistry for science majors. Applicants should have knowledge of current theories and methodologies for teaching chemistry.

3. Please describe your experience with a variety of modern chemical instrumentation.

4. Please describe your industrial experience and graduate coursework, publications, conference presentations, or workshop participation in the fields of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and/or biochemistry. Recent coursework or experience in biochemistry is particularly desirable.

5. Please explain and give concrete examples of how you motivate students, promote student success, and help students achieve academic excellence.

6. Please describe your ability to teach several subjects in your discipline, as well as the capacity to create curriculum for students with differing learning styles and learning levels, by giving examples from your teaching.

7. Please illustrate your ability to work constructively with diverse populations of students, staff, and community.

8. Please give a detailed example of how you currently use technology in your teaching and/or your work with students.

9. Please show evidence of continued professional development, and your commitment to serve the campus in other capacities beyond the usual class load.

Salary Range
For a full-time, two-semester position, a maximum starting range of $45,557 to $77,671 is offered, based on the 2008-2009 salary schedule of $45,557 to $105,161. In addition, and annual stipend of $2,752 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.

Pay Philosophy
Starting salaries for academic positions are based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on longevity and professional development. An additional annual stipend is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.

Benefits:
The District provides a comprehensive benefit program effective the first calendar day of the month following the first day of regular employment. Dental and vision care plans for employees and dependents, and life insurance and income protection plans for employees are fully paid by the District. A variety of medical plans covering employees and their dependents are available, with the District paying the major portion of the cost.
