INSTRUCTOR, CHEMISTRY (Chino Campus) | CHAFFEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT CHAFFEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Invites applications for: INSTRUCTOR, CHEMISTRY (Chino Campus) Application deadline: Wednesday, April 15, 2009 4:00 PM (Filling of this position is contingent upon funding) POSITION DESCRIPTION This is a full-time, tenure track chemistry instructor position in the School of Mathematics and Science. Under the direction of the Dean, the assignment for the full-service week will be to teach any and all chemistry courses offered by the department including (but not limited to) introductory chemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry and to participate in any other professional responsibilities as identified under 18.2.3 of the faculty agreement. This assignment is for the Chino Campus. It is possible that the person in this position will also be responsible for classes at the Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga campuses. SCOPE OF ASSIGNMENT This assignment includes (but is not limited to) the following: Instruct classes in chemistry and related subjects in accordance with the established course outlines of record and consistent with the department standards. This includes organizing instruction towards achieving those objectives; participating in the selection of textbooks, lab manuals, and other materials; instructing through lecture, discussion, demonstrations, etc.; conferring with students as appropriate; assigning grades; and providing a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to effective learning. Maintain professional and ethical standards. Remain current in all subject matter areas, in techniques used to study the subject matter, and in the techniques of effective instruction. Participate in the development, assessment, and evaluation processes of student learning outcomes. Participate in department and college meetings and committee work, curriculum and program design and development, community outreach, development of alternative instructional activities for use in the success centers, department website content, student advisement, program review, and other duties necessary for the benefit of the students, the chemistry department, the college, the community, and the profession. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree in chemistry; OR Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry AND master’s degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry; OR Possession of a valid lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service as an instructor in chemistry; OR The equivalent (District equivalency form must be completed at the time of application). Clear sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by: Demonstrated excellence in teaching a wide variety of chemistry courses to science majors and non-majors at the college level. Demonstrated excellence at thoughtful, innovative curriculum design. Demonstrated depth of knowledge and technical skills in a broad spectrum of modern chemistry subject matter and in the instrumentation used to teach this subject matter. A history of research activities or other professional activities that demonstrate ongoing active commitment to the scientific endeavor. Demonstrated knowledge of procedures and protocols in safe handling of chemicals. Demonstrated cooperative, organizational skill in managing laboratory classrooms. Use of computers and other technology in instruction. Experience in integrating modern educational technologies into chemistry curriculum and to use technology to offer instruction through distance delivery modes. Demonstrated experience interacting and communicating with individuals of diverse backgrounds and academic preparation. Appreciation and respect for students and their role and responsibility in the learning process. Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of adult and under-prepared students. Demonstrated skill in using innovative teaching methods, instructional design, and assessment strategies. Effective oral and written communication skills. Effective contribution to collaborative team effort in an academic setting. Demonstrated commitment to active involvement in the full range of professional and leadership roles expected of a community college professor. Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Based upon the minimum and/or desirable qualifications stated in this position announcement, the initial salary placement range is $55,458 to $86,566 (Fall 2009 salary schedule). Placement is based on the regular full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon verification of relevant experience and coursework from a regional or nationally accredited institution of higher learning. THE COLLEGE Chaffey College, one of the first colleges to be established in California, is a two-year public community college situated in an area of natural and tranquil beauty in Southern California. The Rancho Cucamonga campus occupies 200 acres of rolling lawns and native foliage in the foothills of the majestic San Gabriel Mountains. CURRICULA Chaffey College has lower division courses for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, occupational courses for students who wish to gain competence in employable skills, or who wish to improve their skills, and general education courses for all students to provide them with an awareness of the ideas and ideals of our cultural heritage. Transfer programs meet the lower division requirements of four-year colleges and universities. Occupational programs are kept current and latest information on occupational requirements is made available to students through interaction with community leaders and advisory committees. In addition, Success Centers, both on- and off-campus, provide the community with resource centers for the development of basic skills.
